How to Respond when You Are Diagnosed With Cancer

Many people, when first hearing they have some form of cancer, react with feelings of hopelessness and fear, unaware that nowadays cancer, even when it has spread (metastasized) is viewed as a treatable disease, not a death sentence. Gather information about your condition, speak to experts about treatment options, and seek one or two close friends for emotional support. (There is often no need to tell everyone at this point, and you might be glad of the 'normality' this preserves.) Remember that a positive, engaged outlook is almost as important as medical treatment itself in managing this common disease. Take heart!

Steps

Get together with a very close friend, simply to freely and privately 'let out' some of the unfocused emotional 'pressure' that may well have resulted, after receiving a cancer diagnosis. It is, of course, a bad shock for most people. (But you will very likely soon learn that the situation is not as hopeless as you are imagining.) The fist aim here is to help you get over the understandable initial anxiety and stress, and find some calm. This will help prepare you for step two, namely: to gain a better understanding of your particular form of cancer, with a view to maximizing your self-help strategies, possibly including lifestyle changes (diet etc), to assist your own body as it tackles the disease.

Stay positive. Having a positive outlook is crucial when you're overwhelmed with medical worries. All the new information about treatment and what to expect can be daunting and you can easily slip into depression. So remember it's a diagnosis; not a death
sentence.

Learn about your condition, with a view to self-help. Few ordinary people have more than the vaguest understanding of what cancer is, or how it affects the body (varying with the cancer-type). Seek information and advice - from experts only! Also check that you are getting the most up-to-date information: things are changing fast. Be especially wary of the enormous pool of rumor, hearsay and superstition that has built up over the years around the subject of cancer. In truth, medical understanding of cancer, and available treatment, has improved enormously, and is doing so all the time. Yes, be encouraged!

Don't scare yourself at the outset by randomly reading articles about your cancer on the Internet! At the beginning, learn from medical professionals and others with first-hand experience, about your specific condition. Later, you will be able to 'identify and interpret' which articles on the Internet are of real relevance and value.
